Shortage of IT Talent: Three Paths to Address It

By Benjamín Toselli, CEO of IT Hunter

Currently, the job market in Chile and the rest of Latin America faces an unsatisfied demand for tech professionals, driven by several factors and exacerbated by the fact that these profiles prefer to work in a remote/home office mode, while organizations prioritize in-person and hybrid arrangements. In light of this reality, there are three possible paths that companies can take to address the shortage of IT profiles.

One of these paths is related to tapping into globalized technological talent: Today, technology is constantly evolving and changing, making technological talent increasingly essential for organizational growth. However, in our country and the region, the supply of talent is insufficient to meet the demand. One solution to this problem is to hire globalized technological talent. This means seeking out and hiring highly skilled and experienced professionals, regardless of their geographical location. To achieve this, it's important for companies to adapt to new work modalities and be more flexible in their talent management.

A second approach is to attract such talent by offering job opportunities that include remote work arrangements. More and more IT professionals are opting for this employment format, especially because it offers greater flexibility and a better balance between personal and work life. However, on the part of companies, there is still resistance to remote work due to the belief that it reduces productivity and hinders collaboration. To overcome this challenge, it's important for companies to establish clear and effective remote work policies that enable efficient communication, proper collaboration, and performance based on clear and realistic goals.

A third alternative is presented by the so-called Digital Nomads. These are professionals who work online from anywhere in the world and can provide a multicultural and diverse perspective that can enrich corporate culture and enhance competitiveness in the global market. However, it's important to address legal hiring issues in order to effectively work with them. In Europe, for example, various countries are granting special visas for digital nomads.

In summary, in the face of the current shortage of tech specialists, companies must be willing to adapt to new work modalities and be more flexible in their talent management. This may include remote work and hiring digital nomads, as long as legal issues are resolved and managed appropriately. By doing so, they can expand their access to highly skilled and experienced talent and enhance their competitiveness in the global market.
